The State of the Galaxy in 2376
In the aftermath of the Dominion War, the Federation Alliance stands victorious… *but not at peace.*
The Cardassian Union lies in ruin, its people struggling to rebuild from the ashes of occupation and betrayal. Starfleet vessels now serve not as instruments of war, but as guardians of a fragile recovery, delivering aid, preserving order, and walking the fine line between assistance and interference.
Beyond the Bajoran Wormhole, the Dominion has begun to fracture. With the collapse of centralized control, and schism in the Great Link, its once-unified empire splinters into rival factions. Rogue Founders and their loyal Vorta command isolated fleets, Jem’Hadar warriors fight without purpose, and entire worlds seize their chance at freedom. A Dominion Civil War is brewing.
As unrest spreads across the Gamma Quadrant, a tide of refugees surges toward newly reestablished Federation colonies and the wormhole, bringing with them stories of chaos… and whispers of a rising power within the Dominion’s shadow.
In the Alpha Quadrant, the Romulans retreat back to their own territory, which now includes a foothold in former Cardassian territory, and the Klingon Empire retains control of the Minos Korva sector. The Federation’s 'Allies' have never been this close.
On Cardassia, the **Cardassian Provisional Government** struggles to find its place under the leadership of Castellan Elim Garak and under increased pressure from the Obsidian Order. The True Way reasserts itself, taking advantage of the power vacuum.
Now, as old enemies rebuild and new threats emerge, Starfleet must confront a sobering truth:

Developments Since the End of the War
Following the end of the Dominion War in late 2375, the Alpha Quadrant entered a tense period of reconstruction, political uncertainty, and renewed exploration. Starfleet, having suffered unprecedented wartime losses, initiated a large-scale modernization and refit program across the fleet. Many front-line vessels — including the USS Venture — were extensively upgraded with enhanced tactical systems, long-range sensor suites, reinforced shielding, and modular scientific facilities intended to support a return to deep-space exploratory operations alongside continued border security duties.
In the Gamma Quadrant, the Federation formally concluded Operation Lantern, a year long initiative focused on stabilizing Federation presence beyond the Bajoran Wormhole following the war. The operation culminated in the establishment of the New Bajor Colony, envisioned as both a civilian settlement and diplomatic gateway for renewed Gamma Quadrant relations. Supporting the effort was the construction of Outpost Rekantha, a strategically positioned Starfleet installation tasked with coordinating exploration, commerce protection, and frontier defense along the edge of Federation-controlled space known colloquially as The Pale.
Meanwhile, the Federation remained heavily engaged in humanitarian and reconstruction efforts on Cardassia Prime, where the Dominion’s final actions left the planet devastated and its civilian infrastructure near collapse. Starfleet Engineering and Federation relief agencies provided industrial replicators, medical aid, and logistical support on a massive scale, though political instability within the weakened Cardassian Union continued to hamper recovery efforts.
Territorial disputes emerging from the war further complicated the postwar political landscape. The Klingon Empire retained control of several former Cardassian border systems seized during the conflict, citing strategic necessity and wartime sacrifice, despite Federation diplomatic objections. Similarly, the Romulan Star Empire refused to relinquish portions of conquered Breen territory near its frontier, increasing tensions across former Dominion-aligned regions. These unresolved occupations contributed to a fragile balance of power in the years immediately following the war, with Starfleet increasingly required to balance exploration, diplomacy, and deterrence along multiple unstable borders.
